A study comparing migrant domestic workers (MDWs) and Lebanese admitted to De La Croix hospital from October 2007 to October 2012 found that: MDWs were almost twice as likely to be diagnosed with psychotic disorders, undergo electroshock therapy, and almost all of them were given anti-psychotic medications, at a much higher dose than Lebanese. Why? Because “pressure is inflicted on the medical team by the employer to lower the costs of hospitalization and accelerate deportation”.
