Silent Vigil for Shanti Rai

September 6, 2012

Case Advocacy

Shanti Rai is a Nepalese domestic worker in Lebanon.

She arrived to Lebanon on Feb. 5 2010. She died in Lebanon on Aug. 18 2012. She was 26 years old.

Her body was found hanging in a DVD shop in Antelias.

The employer’s name is Daad Badr. Shanti had been working for her for 2.5 years. In the police report, she mentions, like all other employers who testify in police reports, that she “treats her well”.

In addition:

“Two weeks ago, she told me that she wanted to go to her country. I agreed on that and asked her to wait for a while till I bring a new house workers. SHe accepted that and did not show any upsetting.”

” I am amazed how my house worker has committed this act and hung herself. Twenty minutes have elapsed between the moment I saw her alive and the moment she was dead.”

One week, after Shanti’s death, news was out of another Nepalese worker dead in Tripoli.

Please join us for a silent vigil for Shanti to remember her and honor her death in Antelias, at the shop where she passed away.

Meeting point at Dawra round about at 11:00 am on Sunday. A bus will be ready to drive us to the exact address. We will be back by 1 pm.
